Originally, the federal holiday was known as Armistice Day, according to the US Veterans Affairs website. It was created to honor the veterans of World War I. However, legislation in 1954 changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Postal and courier services are suspended for the day. Nonessential federal and city offices are also closed in observance. It is marked by parades, church services, and in many places, the American flag is hung at half-mast.
